COAST CONTEMPORARY 2025
examples of artistic work
These photographs were produced during two artist residencies in 2025: Velferden in Sokndal, Norway and PADA Studios in Barreiro, Portugal.
I hope to show images from these two residencies at Coast Contemporary in September 2025 at Velferden, where some of these photographs were taken.
The images explore iron-rich mining waste at two sites: the sand deposit waste from ilmenite ore mining to produce titanium dioxide white pigment at Sandbekk in Norway and the ash waste from processing of pyrite ore to produce fertilisers in Barreiro, Portugal. These waste products were produced at a similar time in the early part of the twentieth century and yet both linger visibly in the landscape over 60 years later.
Through my photography, I would like to bring these two very different yet surprisingly connected sites into a conversation through pigment and colour. These images explore the lasting impacts of mining activities on the natural environment, evoking through rich colour and texture how the waste from industrial activities linger in the landscape through time.
